Book Clubs

After everyone was prepared, the kids met in their clubs to share with each other what they did to improve upon their goal that they selected.  Once they shared, their group members gave feedback.

Planning in Book Clubs

Each student chose one of our top 3 learning targets from our current reading unit: reading fluently, literary language, or keeping track of longer books.  Once they chose what club they felt they wanted to be a part of, they were put into club groups.  After that, they individually prepared their own part to share in their book clubs.  These photos show the clubs making a plan.

Capitalization Detectives

Today in Writer’s Workshop, we practiced being capital letter detectives.  We talked about a variety of reasons why authors use capital letters in their work.  They then used a piece of sample writing to search for capital letters and then talk with their carpet buddy about why the author used the capital letters.

Professor PostIts

Here we are practicing being the best “Professor PostIt” we can be.  During our Independent Reading, we practiced reading a chapter or a section of our book.  At the end of each chapter or section, we decided on a sentence that would tell what that chapter or section was mainly about.  Then when we got together with our reading partners, we shared what we wrote.

Keeping Track of Longer Books

We’ve been learning lately about how important it is to keep track of your reading as you’re reading longer and longer books.  We also discussed strategies about how we could best do that.  Yesterday, we did a lesson on Same Book Partnerships and talked about discussion points while we’re reading together.  Today, we met 3 new reading friends:  Too Too, Onesie, and Professor Post It.  These new reading friends taught us the wrong ways and the right way to use Post Its to track our reading in longer books.  Some of our classmates were willing to also dress up after the lesson for some pictures since Mrs. Sonsalla did for the mini-lesson.  :)
